NFL Films President Steve Sabol Dies of Brain Cancer at 69

USWNN - His perspective helped transform the NFL to make it one of the most popular sports leagues in the world. Steve Sabol, president of NFL Films, who worked for decades with his father Ed, founder of this organization, died at age 69 due to brain cancer.

Doctors diagnosed in March 2011 a cancer on the left side of the brain, after being hospitalized for fainting.

Steve began working with Ed in 1964, and together implemented several innovations that are now taken for granted, like the slow motion replays and to place microphones on coaches and players.

"Steve Sabol was the creative genius behind the extraordinary work of NFL Films," said NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said in a statement.

"Steve's passion for football was matched only by his incredible talent and energy. Steve's legacy will be part of the NFL forever. "

"We see sports as art," Steve Sabol said in an interview in 2011. "That helped us to conceive of football not only as a tradition, but as mythology: Team America, The Catch, The Frozen Tundra [situations and historical plays, which are part of the history of the NFL]."

Ed Sabol was inducted last year into the Hall of Fame football. Steve was the same who gave the keynote address of his father, whose bust will remain on the campus of Canton, Ohio.

Ed and Steve received several premiox Emmy for his contributions to the world of television.
