USWNN - Yunel Escobar will stay shortstop without playing three games. Yunel Escobar was suspended for wearing a homophobic message written on his face in Saturday's game against the Boston Red Sox.

The message "Tu ere maricón" was written under the eyes of Escobar, on the black spot, a sort of shield that players use under the eyes to reduce the sun's glare.

Escobar said the message was intended "to no one in particular" and emphasized the phrase has different connotations in different Latin American countries. He said that he used the phrase as "a joke".

"I have nothing against gay people," he said.

In any case, the player apologized and expressed its agreement with the penalty imposed on him.

"I'm very sorry. I apologize to the fans, the organization and my teammates. Did not mean to offend anyone. I agree with the suspension," he said.

The penalty includes a salary of Escobar discount amount will be donated to the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation and You Can Play, an organization dedicated to eliminate homophobia in sports.

Furthermore, Escobar must participate in a course on tolerance for people with different sexual orientation.

"This is a result of lack of education," said Blue Jays general manager, Alex Anthopoulos. "It's not something that concerns only in sports, but in society ... It is obvious that the problem persists and this one is example".

The manager John Farrell said that Escobar usually write posts under his eyes, with phrases like "Vamous", and that's why no one noticed the phrase.

"In the past I had seen posts that were inspiring, very common, so no one paid attention," said Farrell. "The font size is so small that you have to see it closely," he added.
